The theory test is split into two parts which are the Multiple Choice Questions and the
Hazard Perception Test. Both parts must be passed at the same attempt to pass the test.
Part 1: Multiple choice questions
In the first part of the test you will have around an hour to answer 50 multiple choice questions
covering a wide range of driving topics. The pass mark is 43 or more.
You will be presented with one question at a time, and can navigate forwards and backwards, until you are happy with all your answers.
To answer a question you must select the option using the touch-screen.
There is a 15min practice session you can get used to the system.
Part 2: Hazard Perception
The hazard perception part of the test follows the multiple choice part, after a short break.
The test consists of 14 video clips, about a minute each, showing a variety of driving situations
from the driver's point of view. You are assessed on how quickly you spot a hazard, by clicking
the mouse as soon as you see it. In 13 of the clips there is one hazard, and in 1 (random) clip
there are two hazards. A hazard is anything that would cause the driver to change speed or
direction to avoid the situation. For the test you must spot 'developing' hazards, i.e. Hazards
that move, e.g. cars pulling out of driveways, cyclists turning, and pedestrians crossing.
The best way to improve your hazard perception is to practice whenever you are in the car -
try spotting hazards as either the driver or passenger.
