Getting started

Getting started

Before you can start your driving lessons you need to have a provisional driving licence. You can obtain

a provisional driving licence application form (D1) from your local Post Office.

You can now also apply for a licence online at Direct.co.uk

Minimum age to drive a car in the UK

There has been much talk and many rumours about raising the current driving age to 18. One reason for this is that the majority if not all the other European countries start driving at this age. There is no current plans to raise the driving age in the UK.

The minimum age to drive a car in the UK is still 17.

You can apply for your licence 3 months before your 17th birthday.

Eyesight for driving

The current requirement for eyesight when driving is the ability to read an old style car number plate in daylight from a minimum distance of 20.5 meters. New style car number plates which were introduced back in September 2001 you should be able to read from a distance of 20 meters.

If you need to wear either glasses or contact lenses to meet this requirement then you MUST wear them at all times whilst driving.

Start learning straight away

Remember the current UK driving test is taken in two parts. The first part is the Theory and Hazard Perception Test. It is best to start your studies for this test straight away, even if your only 16. The test cannot be taken until you reach 17 but remember once passed you have 2 years in which to pass the practical driving test.
